My Personal Noise Lab

E-Bow vs Bow Experiment Part 1
15

Hello my dear “Within Viewers” accomplices,

As I’m getting a little closer to the Midsummer Prog Festival, where I’ll play on May 24th, I’ve set my noise lab in the studio B in order to experiment with sound effects, sonic textures, and layers of audio vibrations. I’m always looking for different type of textures, of fragmented tones, to add some dusty, imperfect and uneasy type of oscillating components designed to reflect humanity to the emotionally engaging nature of my creative endeavors… A lot of words to say that I’m looking for whatever beauty in decay might be floating in the invisible. And if I have never been much of a fan of the pitch-perfect essence of the e-bow, I wanted to feel it for myself, especially since I cannot bring my Moog Claravox Centennial Theremin special edition on tour. Yes, I do have self-imposed limitations once in a while… I’m crazy but not THAT crazy!

The reason I’ve been “suspicious” regarding the usage of the e-bow so far is clearly aligned with the fact that I’ve always despised any form of static perfection in art — not the ability to execute it but the sterility of it. I call it the stagnating botox effect. I need real, I need honest, I need scars and wrinkles, not pale or faded. I need life being lived. While the rest of the band is offering me the stream of that journey, I bring the exulting highs and the daring confrontations that goes with every voyage worth-living.

And for those who asked me if I was actually “rehearsing” any of my "parts"… Well, I don’t think you can. Or maybe I can’t. It’s only a matter of explorative let go. The rest is only elusive. And to look cool in interviews when asked how I call my unique “artistry”, I will humbly said that it’s a form of sonic post-modernism and brutalism. Yes, I know... It sounds serious and pretty pompous for all the “noises” that it is for most people! No worries, I have always been misunderstood!

That being said, the real “treat” for me is always to bring those sonic human-like facets to the band and to see if the song I’m working on will “welcome” any of those ethereal fleshy bits to its evolving midst, as it’s the song that ultimately defines it all.

I will probably post a part 2 involving the whole band before leaving for the festival… I’m as intrigued with the creative outcome as I hope you are!

Life creates life,

Alex
